The concern for service carries out the practices of the Society of Friends (Quakers).  The question studied was the effects of requiring community service.  Pre and post test measures were taken using instruments to measure self-esteem, social and personal responsibility.  Interview and group discussion were used to gather data.  The students in this study showed a significant increase in social and personal responsibility.  Self-esteem did not change significantly. In chapter one he describes the church, using both subjective and objective indicators ro renewal.  In chapter two he gives a theological foundation based on Jesus as servant.  In chapter three he presents a design for renewal that includes a sermon series, education class series, and a retreat.  Chapter four is an evaluation. Results were mixed.  To an extent the church developed a spirit of risk and a vision of community service. This study examines the role of the churches as an important part of downtown Washington DC experienced the trauma of urban renewal.  Initially, the church's response was dominated by institutional concerns of building and maintaining itself.  Slowly, patterns of community involvement and mission evolved. Ministries were developed for older single apartment residents, single young adults, and a utilization of facilities for 3 separate ethnic congregations.  The thesis describes how the church using the 'servanthood' model can renew its vigor and theological reality in a changing neighborhood.
