Since then, changes in society, religion and the university itself have created a far different cultural setting for university congregations.  Through a survey of American Baptist university churches and case studies of two congregations, mission and identity in the university church are explored.  Churches studied exhibited a strong sense of identity, strong connections with the community, strong connections between faith and learning, 'spiritual balance,' and were reappropriating the church's tradition for the present day. Methods used included discernment, questionnaires, interviews, interactive programs, and walk-arounds.  In this exploratory case study, the church participants learned who they are, who their neighbors are, and what they are called to do, through spiritual, contextual, historical, organizational, missional, attitudinal, relational, educational, and connectional components. Churches that choose to die can make a significant impact by investing their resources into Christian colleges, church planting, and mission endeavors. The author experienced this process when he led Evergreen Christian Church to close and distribute their assets to Puget Sound Christian College and the other missions they supported. A workshop was designed to educate struggling churches on the life cycle of a church and to suggest options. Generations need to nurture and be nurtured, to teach and be taught; and to mobilize these common human needs. I will be using seven division churches as examples by qualitative research design. This plan was intended to give strategic direction for this church as it attempts to reach the unchurched in Newberg, Oregon and the surrounding community.  The plan was developed through interaction with current literature, as well as field research obtained through surveying Willow Creek Association churches within the state of Oregon.  The plan is still in the final stages of implementation.
