The specific congregation being considered is River of Life Church, and the urban community is Jamaica Plain, located in the western portion of Boston, Massachusetts). The primary premise of the work is that because Jamaica Plain has a distinct identity and relatively small geographical boundaries, River of Life Church can use the concepts and strategies of Prayer Evangelism for significant outreach and community impact. The author suggests that since these principles have been useful in impacting many cities that have historically been closed to the Gospel in different parts of the world, they will be helpful in reaching a diverse community such as Jamaica Plain. The thesis begins with the author's call to this setting of ministry and his interest in the topic. This is followed by a study of Jamaica Plain, its history, development and present conditions. The over one hundred year history of River of Life Church is then discussed, including a description of its present characteristics. Prayer Evangelism is then defined and outlined in terms of territorial commitment, spiritual mapping, identificational repentance, strategic-level spiritual warfare, prophetic acts of faith, organized evangelism and discipleship. The study also considers some common objections to Prayer Evangelism. The thesis concludes with assessments of church and community readiness for implementing these principles, guidelines for strategy development, and actual strategies to be applied on small group, congregational and multi-church levels. A question the thesis ultimately poses is whether the leadership of the local church and other churches in the area will be willing to come together and give themselves to the corporate implementation of the principles of Prayer Evangelism. If they will, this strategy may be useful in bringing renewal to the local church and the urban community."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132215932878848,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:59:51.623Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:03:30Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:00:07Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"bedc1a59-1bd5-4c9e-84ce-eea15dcc7e31","accessControl_ssim":["3c061752-7c7b-4bb9-a12d-84e7b3b32145"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Aging wineskins in a new wine community: recontextualizing the community of faith for the realities of the community at large"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:03:28Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:37:49Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["e2218b59-6599-47a5-b980-42f85964a174"],"hasLease_ssim":["f0e40961-f8d6-4b9d-b0af-662d34f04c7c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Bruce Jackson"],"year_tesim":["2001"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Brian H Gearin"],"keyword_tesim":["Church and community"],"publisher_tesim":["Grodon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["First Baptist Church (Everett, Mass)","Social change"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["In this thesis the author looks a several strategic variables that explore the demographic and transmigration shifting that has occurred in the community of Everett, Massachusetts. This study also looks at the resulting effects that these changes have had on the community of faith at the First Baptist Church of Everett. In the first chapter a brief history is given for the development of the First Baptist Church of Everett and the community of Everett, Massachusetts. As this history documents, profound ethnic transmigration patterns emerge where the children of the long-time residents of Everett move to suburban locales while at the same time differing ethnic groups begin to take up residence in Everett in greater numbers. In chapter two the theological paradigms of Place, Peace and Prayer are discovered rooted in the analysis of the book of Nehemiah. These theological paradigms are then operationalized in the context of the First Baptist Church of Everett interacting with the community now in Everett. Chapter three is a literature review of the precedent literature that looks at the issues of cross-cultural ministry, church growth analysis, sociological research and leadership development. Chapter four analyzes the church systems that previously had operated in the First Baptist Church of Everett. The present system in place at the church is also analyzed with the addition of the challenges facing the congregation as they grapple with the change brought about by the demographic shifting of the community. Additionally, key leverage points are identified in the church system that are utilized to counterbalance the issues of leadership and philosophical disconnect between the church and the community. Chapter five details the implementation process of the two key variables to the church system and the resulting outcomes of these interventions for the recontextualization of the church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132235593678848,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:00:10.373Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:59:05Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:21:13Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"05d03ff5-cf65-474c-afae-68a9c1f5db16","accessControl_ssim":["73c85046-bec6-4f25-bc83-aaf01828109a"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The history of the First Congregational Church of Royalston"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:59:04Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:17:13Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["67e67e7b-94ae-4cb4-82a5-deb4e6608d2a"],"hasLease_ssim":["620be2b5-094b-4677-b7aa-5c71087c7aba"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Garth M Rosell"],"year_tesim":["2001"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Virginia E Asel"],"keyword_tesim":["Church and community"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["First Congregational Church (Royalston, Mass)","Church and the world"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This work is a thorough historical examination of the First Congregational Church of Royalston, Massachusetts. Intended to be completed in time for the 150th anniversary celebration of the church's fourth meetinghouse, it recounts the history of the church from its inception in 1766 through a civil war, two world wars, an increasingly secular and pluralistic context, up to the present day. A primary intent of the work is to trace the changing nature of the relationship between the church and the town. Whereas in the early days the connection between them was vital and practically bordered on an identity, today several wedges have been driven between them. Pluralistic forces at work in the culture have posed political, social, religious and legal reasons for this separation. However, an even stronger causal explanation derives from forces at work within the church itself. These internal forces of a doctrinal, theological and spiritual nature not only provide the deeper analysis of what has eroded the connections between church and community, they also provide the best hope for a restoration of a biblical sense of community to the church and town. The thesis begins with the earliest pastor of the church, and it endeavors in subsequent chapters to divide the material up according to distinctive and innovative thematic units. Examples of such units include short-term pastors, the two World Wars and women's ministries. Most of the chapters are written chronologically, although a few had to be written from a more topical perspective. The work recounts the subtle shift in the religious zeal and theological integrity of the church, issues determinative of what are argued to be the theological and spiritual forces that trump the political and social ones in depriving the church of its historical role as the central focal point of the community. The central guiding question of the thesis is: what has most contributed to the erosion of this church's role in community and in forming community? This question is posed around the idea of whether the church can and will recapture anything like the central role in this town it has played in the past, or whether it will serve in the largely formal and decorative role of adding an essentially aesthetic adornment to the Royalston Common."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129788652453888,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:21:16.788Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:06:10Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:42:41Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"3e64bc77-b20c-4b05-aa4d-a2d948846be9","accessControl_ssim":["35b83fc1-bda2-4862-bac2-bad8fb450e7d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Ministry beyond the gates: training for ministry as community service chaplains"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:06:10Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:56:34Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a8eed2db-85da-4338-967b-498e5d32e472"],"hasLease_ssim":["55bd6ff6-c8c1-497d-aa8b-1e95d2ecbcef"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Beeson Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["Jerry W Batson"],"year_tesim":["2002"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Benjamin Perez"],"keyword_tesim":["Church and community"],"publisher_tesim":["Beeson Divinity School of Samford University"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy--Training of","Chaplains"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Ministry beyond the gates is driven by two Biblical imperatives; to carry the Gospel to the world and to embody that Gospel through a ministry of caregiving that honors God and ennobles people.
