The project director worked with the Philadelphia Baptist Church Missions Ministry Team to develop a community missions and ministry strategy for Philadelphia Baptist Church. The goal of this Doctor of Ministry project involved researching two case studies of church-sponsored community gardens and one case study of a community garden sponsored by a Christian college that were created between 2003-2012 in order to discern some best practices for launching a Christ-centered community garden. In order to explore this phenomenon, the author built an arts ministry within a local church with three branches: an art gallery with 3-5 exhibitions per year, a program of arts education with 3-5 offerings per year, and a regular practice of including the arts in worship in a variety of settings. The author researched how study of the missional ecosystem helped to move a congregation beyond a limited benevolence outreach to an effective ministry with special focus on ministry to the adolescent. This missional conversation is framed within the larger missio-ecclesiological theology. God's mission to the world can only be understood through the incarnate Word of God. Incarnation is presented as the model for fulfilling God's purpose in the world. The hypothesis is that if persons could participate in a collaborative affordable housing pre-readiness program, eligibility for housing opportunities would improve and the church would become more effective in its mission to empower the community. A qualitative and quantitative research methodology was used with the congregation, community residents and community leaders to identify and measure barriers. The interviews, workshops, classes and forums addressed the issues that hindered eligibility with community agencies. Given partnerships between churches and communities seldom exist; Ivanhoe implemented a teaching/learning context in partnership with other institutions to equip youth to deal with social, economic and spiritual challenges threatening their well-being and productivity. A qualitative approach using participatory observation, surveys, journaling, and spiritual formation lessons and activities was utilized. The hypothesis states that spiritually empowered youth internalize God's love and develop spiritual discipline and self-control needed to transcend and transform racial, social, and economic constraints.
