This report explores the differences in modern and postmodern cultures and, using theological and biblical foundations, outlines specific characteristics of leaders necessary to lead in this postmodern time, as well as offers similarities pastors and other church leaders will exhibit in their postmodern leadership in their congregations. Research for this report included conversations with three pastors and five elders over three two-hour sessions. The literature review examined the differences in the positions of church administrator and executive pastor and the changes in leadership style of those who moved from one position to another position higher on the organizational chart. Two case studies of individuals who were church administrators and became executive pastors were used as the research method. The ministerial staff and congregation participated in this project by completing a 360 degree survey of the participants.  The project director presented the results to the ministerial staff in coaching sessions. Conversely, an effectively managed pastoral persona can actually aid in the communication of a message.  This project explores the issue and offers strategies for effectively managing pastoral persona.  The project surveys scholarship on the subject of rhetoric, a study of celebrity preachers, and the results of two focus groups held to explore issues of pastoral persona with mid career pastors and with seminary students. Biblical wisdom literature also provides guidance in navigating life situations (Roland Murphy, James Crenshaw).  The current study hypothesizes that high emotional intelligence will assist clergy in navigating critical leadership situations.  To test this hypothesis, twenty-six pastors were administered the BarOn Emotional Quotient Inventory.  A group profile was generated, and some findings were significant.  Results have implications for hiring, evaluating, and training pastors. The observers rated their pastors fairly highly, except for a significantly lower rating on their 'challenging the process.' These congregations were forty percent smaller that the average congregation in the United States. The author researched the work ethic of the clergy of the West Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church. The author presented findings to clergy groups around the conference of how the founders and the theology of the church have informed that work ethic. The presentation included discussion of the Protestant work ethic, the Spirit of Capitalism, and the elements of play and creativity. For consistent improvement to occur, there must be a plan for evaluation.  In many areas of life it is possible to take personal inventory and evaluate oneself.  Why not practice the same discipline in preaching?  Improvement implies a standard.  The author has concluded that the standard of preaching is made up of three essential elements.  These elements are the content of the sermon, its ability to connect with the listeners, and spiritual life.  A good sermon must proclaim the truth of Scripture, be relevant to those who hear it, and become a supernatural event.  The author then questioned a group of pastors concerning their efforts for improvement.  Fourteen of these pastors volunteered to participate in a six-week project for improvement through self-analysis.  Only three of the volunteers actually participated. The author explains and analyszes the results of the survey and the experiences of those who did the personal review. This project discovered and analyzed the potential for pastoral longevity in the Evangelical Free Church of America.  Advantages and disadvantages of both short-term and long-term pastorates were given.  The case was made biblically and practically for long-term pastorates.  EFCA pastors who had been in their churches ten years or longer were surveyed.  Longevity factors were then identified, corroborated, and analyzed.  Demographic factors concerning both pastors and their churches were included.
