Ministries that could last several years end up lasting just a few years due to unmet expectations and the inability to resolve conflict.  In this work, the author contends that long-term ministry is valuable.  Ministries lasting ten years or more are normally based on mutual trust between pastor and congregation.  The depth of relationship brings trust and stability to a church unknown in shorter pastorates. The literature supports this in both religious and secular fields.  Those entering ministry need to be well prepared for the rigors of relationship building, making themselves vulnerable and open, while still maintaining a level of trust and professionalism. The Convention of Atlantic Baptist Churches is comprised of over 500 churches and is benefiting greatly from the dedicated service of pastors who are daring to pay the price of long-term service.  Their insights were a primary source of research in determining what relational factors are paramount in the building of a marathon ministry.  Consulted also were the executive and regional ministers who from their perspectives add much as they consult with search committees, pastors, and congregations in crisis.  They serve on the front lines of ministry and understand well the pressures that go along with building a significant relational ministry.  Several theological themes were discussed under the heading of the struggle between the sin-led life and the Spirit-led life.  Such subjects as submission, partnership, and shepherding were viewed through these lenses. This aided greatly in discerning the primary issues facing churches and pastors as they pursue significant ministry together. The local church is God's plan for this age and the local church should feature biblical preaching. That being the case, the preacher that a church calls is the most strategic decision made by a particular local church.  Pastoral Search Committees are motivated to pursue excellence in the pulpit.  However, there are essentially no available resources designed with the goal of motivating and equipping these search committees to call pastors who will preach expository sermons.  This thesis-project designed a manual for that specific purpose.  The manual was taught as a Sunday morning elective in a local church. In my paper I show how lay leadership understands their role is crucial to the living out of Christian mission within a congregation.  When a congregation's leaders become distracted by other issues the direction of ministry can easily be derailed.  This can lead the congregation away from the purpose of Christian mission.  By keeping lay leadership, and thereby the entire congregation, focused on mission, God's will in the world can be carried out.  2.  It is of paramount importance to help keep the congregation focused on the mission of evangelism.  3.  This paper is written using the style format contained in: Kate L. Turabian, A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, Sixth Edition (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1996). 4.  A needed healing process was begun at the congregation. In 2002 seventy percent of the pastors had less than fifteen years in ministry.  The members' expectations of their pastor have changed and become widely polarized.  Since there is not an evaluation and affirmation system in place, many of the pastors struggle to find satisfaction in pastoral work.  One of the major premises of this project is that pastors are central figures in the church and the success of God's work is largely dependent on how effectively pastors function. Method: A Myers-Briggs Type Indicator assessment and four additional assessment tools Dick and Miller's Profile of Congregational Leadership were administered to the Hungarian Adventist pastors with the goal of assisting each pastor to better face the many changes and challenges in society. Results: A strategy was developed to improve professional competencies, spiritual assessment, and the placement of Hungarian pastors.  The strategy will be implemented and assessed partly through this Doctor of Ministry project, and further recommendations will be given to different entities concerned in Hungary.  This strategy will improve the relatively young pastoral team's leadership skills, will improve cultural sensitivity, and will help the pastoral team grow in gift-based ministries.  This project will also help the administration of the church in Hungary to follow a preference-based pastoral placement plan. The selected pastors were asked to fill out a five-page survey about their own personal and professional development practices.  The author reviewed the biblical/theological data regarding the New Testament role of pastor/teacher. The author then conducted a brief survey of the personal and professional practices of past Christian leaders. The author examines the New Testament terms 'elder,' 'overseer,' and 'pastor,' asking how associate pastors fit into the mix.  He then examines Scriptural examples of men who held positions akin to 'associate' status, who were later elevated to senior leadership ranks -- Joshua, Elisha, the disciples, and Timothy. Field research consisted of interviewing six senior pastors who formerly were associate pastors.  From these interviews the author compiled a list of activities to prepare himself for the transition from an associate to a senior pastorate, and then reported on the fulfillment of the activities. A sermon evaluation form was developed through research and consultation with Hershael York, Professor of Christian Preaching at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.  Six sermons were preached and then evaluated by the project director, eight congregational evaluators and four peer evaluators. Blanchard into the context of ministry.  Eight ministers volunteered to receive training and implement the training into their ministries.  Each minister enlisted team members from their ministry setting in order to accomplish a specific task.  The ministers and team members used assessment instruments to track changes in leadership behavior.  The project's goal was to answer the question; 'Is Situational Leadership valuable and useful in the context of ministry?'     This project was effective and provided a tool for ministerial leadership.
