Matthew"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The dissertation seeks to answer two questions: 1) Was doctrine or the mission of making disciples the driving force behind the Great Commission Resurgence movement in the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) that began in 2007 and culminated in the passing of the final report from the Great Commission Resurgence Task Force in 2010? (2) Was the driving force behind the Great Commission resurgence biblical and effective in reversing the stagnation and decline in the baptismal number of the SBC? In researching this, no major works were found that focused on this topic of doctrine versus mission as the motivating factor of the Great Commission Resurgence. In forming a research strategy, four areas were examined. First was the need to exegete the Great Commission from Matthew 28:16-20. The Greek text was studied for linguistic syntax and structure. Additionally, Bible dictionaries and commentaries were referenced. Second, it was necessary to look at recent history dealing with ecumenical movements and their effects. Third, the Great Commission Resurgence itself was investigated beginning with Daniel Akins's 'Answering the Call to a Great Commission Resurgence' at the 2007 Building Bridges Conference and culminating with the report form the taskforce at the SBC in 2010. It explores this challenge through the biblical stories of Joseph in Nebuchadnezzar's Court, Daniel in Pharaoh's Court, Esther in the court of Xeroxes, and through the teachings of Jesus. The writings of Luther, Calvin, Packer, Newbigin, and Kirkwood were researched for their theological implications for ministry in church and state. Christian chaplains and supervisors were interviewed to describe their ministries. I have designed a two-year course for discipleship training called 'Becoming the Glorious Bride'. The participants were eighteen parents and grandparents within New Community Church of St. Marys Ohio. Robert Coleman's eight principles in The Master Plan of Evangelism (selection, association, consecration, impartation, demonstration, delegation, supervision and reproduction) were the major focus of instruction and hands on week to week assignments. Yet, women's education in spiritual and biblical matters ought to be taught in the church to equip them for the Great Commission mandate. This thesis-project explores the effectiveness of an existing spiritual education curriculum in the form of a mentoring program for college women. The evaluator uses the positions of women's epistemological development proposed by Belenky and her colleagues as a basis for evaluation. The author also discusses various women of the Bible as they relate to the mentoring program and one's understanding of how the program ought to be restructured. The project was implemented with fourteen current and future leaders of Calvary Baptist Church. The project director did biblical research on the missional commands of Christ and general research on the missional mindset. Lesson plans were formulated and project participants were led through seven equipping sessions. Evaluation of participants' progress toward the missional mindset goal was measured with a pretest and posttest assessment instrument and a report time held eight days after the equipping session during an evening worship service at Calvary Baptist Church. The evidence of their obedience to this 'command' and the effects of their choice can be clearly seen in the New Testament church of the book of Acts. The author of this project has created a preaching/teaching response model based upon Acts 2:42 that has addresses the local church's declining health of 'making disciples.' Building on knowledge relative to biblical teachings, historical church discipleship, and contemporary literature on this subject, this study advocates the use of three phases of teaching to accomplish this goal. These are the study of a contemporary catechism; the development of Life Groups that incorporate Bible study, fellowship, and service; and a mentoring ministry that pairs spiritually older believers with spiritually younger believers.
