The study involved use of a two group pretest/posttest to test for knowledge gain as well as three spiritual gift inventories.  Attitude change was measured by use of a semantic differential constructed for this project.  A focused interview was also conducted with small group participants.  The result of the project showed some significant change in attitude toward ministry involvement in those who understood themselves as gifted for ministry. The problem is outlined from a sociological, theological and local parish perspective.  Self-denial ethics and ethics based on expressive individualism are examined sociologically.  Karl Barth's doctrine of justification is compared with Philip Brickman's definition of commitment. Christian freedom is discussed as the necessary ingredient for lifelong commitments. The research group was a random sampling of eleven American Baptist churches in the San Diego area.  A questionnaire was given to determine the believer's level of participation in, attitude towards, and understanding of the Lord's Supper.  Those in the top twenty percent and bottom twenty percent were given Pittard's Revised Commitment Test. Participants and a control group matched by age and sex were administered a self-inventory test designed to measure change in the four areas investigated in the training event. Both groups were given a pre-test immediately preceding the event and then a post-test two months later.  The four areas in which change was measured are: increased self-awareness and self-acceptance, more effective group building, greater discernment and enabling of individual gifts, increased commitment to ministry.
