Bremem First United Methodist Church was recently severely conflicted, but is resolving its conflict and growing. The challenge ahead is to internalize and institutionalize new forms of relating to each other and become fully a church that makes decisions in a collegial style. The interventions designed to bring this ideal, came to life from a model emphasizing adaptation and shared learning. A four-month sermon series and an accompanying Bible study emphasized the power of remembering. Other interventions include a revival using former pastors who remembered the church's spiritual journey during their pastorates. A naming of the new building designed to claim the best of the church's past and to repent of it's failings. A number of crises during these interventions gave leaders opportunities to practice new skills in open and respectful conversation."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["7eda0323-a6d9-4fe2-807a-22620dd389a5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128515271196672,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:01:02.397Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:36:21Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:18:27Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e0355ace-e723-4675-9b37-d8df7df529b7","accessControl_ssim":["befe1fb7-e04d-4a48-89d5-c5fd3c2ccfa8"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Church conflict: aetiology, pathology, and transformation--a Jamaican case study"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:36:20Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:33:11Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7e3e61aa-9fca-4c03-8335-900f42a521aa"],"hasLease_ssim":["f729c80d-316f-40b1-9fa2-5b0a32d678f1"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["David W Kuck"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Dameon A Black"],"keyword_tesim":["Family systems theory","Congregations--Internal conflict"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church history","Jamaica"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Within the Jamaican context many churches are split by conflict. Very often the response and attempts to resolve congregational conflict exacerbates the situation. The congregation is analyzed using a family systems approach. The development and the application of a strategy to achieve the three-fold goal are explored. Two churches that split fifteen years ago because of a dispute about leadership decided to merge again. This project uses the reconciliation of these two churches as a model for other congregations that may consider merging. Three major criteria--philosophical, relational, and physical--are crucial factors for a successful merger. Hindrances to unity stemmed from spiritual conflicts and a process requiring unanimous decisions. Conflicts involved leadership issues, power plays by individuals, personal preferences about worship, and conflict over Christian life teaching that led to tabling the merger and renewed division. The project outlines seven steps toward a successful merger that formed a new church, based on the experience of these churches and research in the literature."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130881226702848,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:38:38.748Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":62,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
