The primary purpose of the project is to reveal to church leadership the necessity of dealing with conflict in a biblical manner. The ultimate goal is to lead the focus group to develop a strategy for healing relationships in times of conflict, and then to create a desire within the church to adopt that strategy. All the material within the project is designed to approach the positive side of conflict. The sermons focus on the biblical material while the small group sessions deal with both biblical and secular materials. Chapter one presented background information, definitions, research instruments and a statement of the projects' three goals.  Chapter two was focused on Biblical, theoretical, and literature foundation for conflict.  Chapter three addressed the social and psychological background of Korean immigrant churches, describing the religious background of Korean mentality, politics of Korea, the history of the Baptist church in Korea, and Korean churches in the U.S.  It identified how authority infected pastors and caused conflict in church. Chapter four attempted to equip pastors with conflict resolution skills. Chapter five evaluated the methodology used to find pastors' conflict. A pastor is a primary source of conflict in church. Many small church pastors are frustrated as they witness the decline of the small church. However, many of these pastors continue using preaching models that seem insufficient to address the issues in the small church, primarily the issue of conflict resistance. This thesis proposes that an alternative preaching model is needed in the small church, particularly one with conflict and complexity built into the preaching model, for the purpose of challenging the small church to embrace conflict so that it might be transformed. This is important to the field of homiletics because it seeks to demonstrate a narrative conflictual model of preaching in an institution that regularly resists conflict. The thesis is supported by theory primarily provided by Lyle Schaller and Eugene Lowry. It offers a new model for diagnosis and treatment using the theological framework of Martin Luther's Small Catechism.  A planned questionnaire based on the Ten Commandments is used to collect data for an assessment.  A diagnosis is made that identifies problems with potential for resolution.  Planned interviews based on the Apostles' Creed are used to establish behavioral goals for a plan. Assigned homework based on the Lord's Prayer is used to coordinate the implementation of the plan. Often, these churches are left floundering without any clear sense of direction while they are going through their pastoral transition.  When this occurs the church is often thrown into a state of almost total disarray, confusion, and chaos.  During these periods the church suffers greatly. Unfortunately it often takes a long time for the church to recover from the setbacks which may have transpired during the pastoral transition period. Presently, there is no homogeneous process used throughout the organization for filling pastoral vacancies.  While the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World has a written policy and procedure for filling such vacancies, this policy is not always accepted as the preferred or even viable method. When the written policy and procedure is used the church sometimes ends up a divided house and in litigation. In my thesis, I have gathered and analyzed data and information regarding pastoral transitions in the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World.  I have subsequently developed a pastoral leadership manual in which I set forth several models for filling pastoral vacancies.  It is hoped that the use of such models by membership churches can help alleviate the problem described above. Antagonists are defined as individuals whose intent is the de-stabilization of congregational life. Three case studies in which identified antagonists were active provides the fieldwork for the project. Family systems theory is employed as an aid in understanding the emotional dynamics at work in these congregations. The unique call of the congregation has challenged the church to respond to new needs and problems at the end of the twentieth century. The project is a study of the special role of congregations and the unique relationship between the social sciences and theology. It includes an overview of literature available on consultation, conflict and community and an analysis of two processes of intervention: 'shalom-building' and 'bridgebuilder.' Four case studies illuminate the two intervention processes. An extended period of church conflict marked by multiple church splits resulted in a negative inward focus and the subsequent loss of morale and mission. The director facilitated this process by leading the church through a visioning process which culminated in the writing of a church mission statement.
