author examined how to move an African American church through past hurts to effective ministry. She sought to understand hurts, and the long lasting and negative impact of hurts on individuals and the church. The research was qualitative and used surveys and interviews. Upon analyzing the data the findings were compared and contrasted. The findings revealed passive aggressive behaviors such as gossip and spreading rumors as some ways congregants handled their hurts. Hurts were used by false accusations, a failure to show compassion, and lack of commitment, which negatively impacted the ministry. The spirituality of prayer is vital both in an individual life and in the life of a community.  When faced with personal difficulties, family issues, social conflicts, and relationship problems, we pray and ask others to pray for us.  It is natural for us to ask for intercessory prayer when troubles come in our daily lives.  A theology of prayer regards prayer as a key to all these troubles. An intentional and systematic method of inquiry was employed in gathering information. The researcher used questionnaires and interviews to collect information. He concluded that both churches have a long history of guarding their traditions. This has resulted in conflicts. Familt Systems Theory is an avenue whereby the power of Jesus can be experienced. Conflict itself is only a part of the picture; equally important is the management of conflict. This project collects information from the field through district presidents within the Lutheran Church -- Missouri Synod (LCMS) along with consultants who assist congregations and church organizations that find themselves in conflict. Combining God's Word with an outside source for help provides a church with a resource to help reconcile relationships and resolve conflicts that may not be resolvable using internal procedures. A qualitative research method was employed using surveys and in-depth interviews.  The researcher discovered that conflict situations exist, that participants have an understanding of conflict, and that they believe the church should be concerned about the issue of conflict.  Many participants have unresolved feelings where conflict situations are not engaged.
