The author studies spiritual development, using the theories of Kegan, Erikson, Fowler, Gilligan, and Loder. The history and theology of the catechism that helped shape the identity of the German Reformed people was researched. The author developed a pedagogy, based on Howard Gardner's multiple intelligence theory, for teaching the catechism in the 21st century. A case study was developed based on a six week study of two churches in the United Church of Christ. The author made the following conclusions: 1) Howard Gardner's multiple intelligence theory, as pedagogy, offers different approaches to adults in various stages of their spiritual development. 2) Adults do not have an adequate concept of sin; as a result they are confused about how grace is operative in their lives; therefore, they do not know what it means to live a life of gratitude. 3) Without a strong identity, based on core documents of the faith, there is no congregational loyalty. This author concludes that catechism could benefit our churches immeasurably."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127144109178880,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:39:14.755Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:31:22Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T01:48:18Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"1f4785b1-6ff7-4c65-8f1c-b3a75452f69f","accessControl_ssim":["9060ebd8-775c-48ec-b984-5fd6472629b2"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A study of the Heidelberg Catechism and its adaptability to a program of sex education among young people"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:31:21Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:03:40Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["6de87401-d1d6-4d1a-9b96-73d919c82830"],"hasLease_ssim":["431c6fef-6901-4c6b-9d31-59e6f6a455ef"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities"],"advisor_tesim":["Donald R White"],"year_tesim":["1985"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Burrell A Pennings"],"keyword_tesim":["Relation (Theology)","Heidelberg Catechism"],"publisher_tesim":["United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities"],"subject_tesim":["First Reformed Church (Alexander, Iowa)","Westminster Confession of Faith","Creeds","Augsburg Confession","Christianity","Comparative studies","Sex instruction for youth--Religious aspects"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The thesis contains three parts. Part II highlights the biological and psychological aspects of the sex education program that was carried on among the high school young people at the First Reformed Church of Alexander, Iowa. Part III discusses the Heidelberg Catechism and shows how its theological concepts can be applied specifically to the issues of human sexuality.
