To assist clinicians in this process, the author seeks to integrate a contemporary understanding of Christian asceticism with contemporary perspectives on psychoanalytic abstinence. Noting what he perceives to be an energetic similarity between the two phenomena, the author attempts to create a conversation between the respective communities of knowledge. He then develops a theological basis for the proposed integration, and in a case study, seeks to demonstrate its serviceability. A qualitative research methodology was used to interview twelve women who have been clients in pastoral counseling.  The findings demonstrate that pastoral counseling does facilitate growth in women's faith lives when the process is sensitive to women's unique experience of themselves, of their relationships, and of their God. The research, accomplished through mail-out questionnaires and personal interviews, also considers the impact on the counselor/client relationship of a pastoral counselor's performance of other clergy roles in a local church that sponsors a parish-based counseling ministry. Results confirmed that counselees who are active church members respond more positively to pastoral counseling than inactive or unchurched counselees.  However, the performance of other clergy roles by the counselor did not have a negative effect on the counseling process. The factors of location, privacy, pastoral counselor, cost and referral are rated by their importance in the client's decision to seek counseling at this center.  The responses of church members, unchurched persons, church leaders and non-leaders are compared and contrasted.  Referral was the most important
