Those who counsel in institutional settings in particular are struggling with the need and/or the opportunity to counsel those with whom they have some other role.  This is especially true for the individual who offers counseling within the bounds of the local church community.  A minister in the local church setting has many roles in the life of a congregation.  With these diverse roles in place, church members and others in the community turn to the minister for counseling.  The project is intended to shed light on duality and offer guidelines for the pastoral counselor who does counseling in the immediate context of the local church.  The issue of duality is studied from the perspectives of object relations theory and pastoral theology. It examines the intricate patterns of communication which occur in cross-gender counseling and the deep internal meanings of the effect of a female and male on each other's presence and wholeness within the context of pastoral psychotherapy. This project was researched and studied within the context of three female clients seeking individual psychotherapy treatment with a male pastoral counselor.  Male pastoral counselors need to be intentionally trained to be gender-sensitive. The results of the study indicate that how clients perceive the pastoral aspect of their counseling has bearing on how they experience satisfaction with their counseling. The clients answer essay questions on satisfaction in living, their understanding of faith, God and the helpfulness of pastoral counseling and submit follow-up questionnaires.  The project reports on discussions with the pastoral counselors of the clients and draws practical implications.  The study concludes that differing religious orientations can be documented between clients with histrionic and compulsive patterns.  Female clients of all personality groups score closer to histrionic religious patterns.  No other gender-related findings can be ascertained. Confession, along with a call upon some power greater than one's self, plays a vital part in the recovery process of the alcoholic.  It is a central thrust of the program of Alcoholics Anonymous.  The pastoral counselor is a therapist but also a pastor, a representative of God. The element of confession becomes sharper in pastoral counseling because of the pastor's dual role. The results show a number of differences in the role identity, in the depth or level of counseling and in the approach of the pastoral therapist. For members the couselor was primarily pastor and for non-members the counselor was primarily pastoral
