The work required for effective preaching during appointive change has critical elements that are difficult to navigate without an existing pastoral relationship with the congregation and community. This thesis describes a process that incorporates specific and direct attention to elements of change and vulnerability. It offers methods and models for enabling effective preaching during appointive change through deep connection between the congregation and the preacher. The participants experienced transformation of self through self reflection and deeper encounter with the Lord. Their feedback also suggested a possibility of using the program for small groups. Therefore, the author developed a seminar on traditional Methodist spiritual practices and translated it into Russian. In the course of the work on the seminar and delivery of it, the author spent time in Russia and in the United States consulting with pastors, academics and lay people who serve, or who work with the people of the United Methodist Church in the Eurasian Area. The primary focus of the class leaders is collecting money and attending to the physical well-being of their members in a limited capacity.  According to the general rules written by Wesley, attention should also be given to the 'means of grace,' or the practice of spiritual disciplines.  Doing so would significantly shape the lives of the members in their spiritual formation.  The researcher used pre and post surveys, lectures and small group process to gether, disseminate and integrate information respectively.  Readings in the areas of Wesley's class leader system and the spiritual disciplines were used to gain knowledge. The research project concluded that when persons were given tools and were intentional about learning and practicing the 'means of grace,' their spiritual journey was enhanced.
