The researcher involved the children in activities such as praying, singing, liturgical dancing, journaling and crafts, using the pro-active research method.  This method seeks transformation while conducting qualitative research.  The researcher found that children who participated in grief activities involving prayer and worship were more responsive than those who participated in recreational activities alone. To address the question, a focus group was engaged to study four disciplines of the faith: meditation, sabbath, commitment, and service, to determine if they would help facilitate a movement toward spiritual wholeness.  The findings indicated that there was a lack of awareness of the disciplines, combined with significant life components that vied for their attention. Instead, it has tended to rely upon approaches which focus primarily on conveying information, especially that which is distinctive to Adventism, leaving spiritual formation to somehow occur as a by-product. This project proposes a practice-based approach to the process of preparing people for membership in the Seventh-day Adventist Church. This approach is primarily designed around spiritual practices, but it also provides for the full engagement of the church's fundamental doctrinal beliefs. Drawing from the works of Clifford Geertz, Alasdair MacIntyre, Craig Dykstra, Dorothy Bass, Miroslav Volf, and their colleagues, a model of spiritual practices is developed and explained. This model is then placed in conversation with approaches currently in use by Seventh-day Adventists. As a part of this dialogue, pastors in the Southeastern California Conference of Seventh-day Adventists are surveyed to surface areas of concurrence with, or resistance to, the idea of a practice-centered approach. Next, possibilities are explored for developing an approach that would suggest a list of practices central to Seventh-day Adventist experience, which, when engaged, would also provide a context for reflecting upon the fundamental points of church doctrine. The correlation between transferable church health characteristics and quantitative church growth is analyzed with the use of a researcher-designed questionnaire.  The literature review studies the organic and organizational aspects of church health through a theological understanding of the church as community. The findings demonstrate a positive relationship between the perception of church health and church growth. According to the findings of a survey on the need of establishing the Quality Age-Graded Caring Group done by the writer in 2000, he found out that since the return of Hong Kong to China, church ministers are facing increasing pressure in pastoral care. Therefore, the writer formulates a 13-point 'E.X.C.E.L.L.E.N.T. C.A.R.E.,' strategies as the foundation on which the church designs her strategies for 'Quality Caring Ministry' (QCM). In addition, the writer introduces a rapidly growing 'Quality Church' in Hong Kong--Shatin Baptist Church--as a case study and investigates how she applies the 13 strategic points of QCM in her pastoral caring ministry to expand God's kingdom.
