Therefore, this study was designed to explore how pastors make application in such sermons. The study used a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with four pastors from the Reformed/Presbyterian tradition who were very dedicated to preaching Christ and making good application. Making application from Old Testament narratives is more of an art than science. The task appears even more challenging when preaching Old Testament narratives, because this genre usually does not offer obvious statements from which preachers can formulate applications. What kind of lessons should be drawn from biblical narratives? How does the preacher develop hermeneutically sound and contemporarily relevant applications from this genre?  The project centered around two goals: to enhance the congregants' competence in applying OT narratives to their lives; and to improve the quality of sermon applications in the project writer's preaching. The project implemented proposed theories by developing and delivering a sermon series on Genesis 37-50 in the project writer's congregation. As the fields of Oral Interpretation and Performance Studies show, the Bible is best heard when performed. Preachers who internalize texts speak from a personal encounter with the Word. The thesis studied how a weekly scripture by heart practice serves to focus the preacher's attention, engage the imagination, inform exegesis, and guide sermon preparation. A long-term sermon plan was developed and implemented using the book of Second Corinthians to impact the believers at Fellowship Evangelical Church towards spiritual growth. An instrument was developed and used to pre-test and post-test participants in order to measure the effectiveness of the messages preached. Measurable areas of spiritual development were developed, incorporated didactically into the series, and stressed throughout the preaching series. The analysis of the post-test shows a measurable change in some areas of spiritual growth. The conclusion of this research project is that spiritual development in daily living can be measurably influenced in a congregation through long-term sermon preparation and
