The leader used the socratic (open-ended questioning) method to enable participants to expand their awareness of the power of Scripture in their personal lives. A process was provided for daily prayer and meditation between sessions.  Sessions included meditation, writing in a journal, responding to questions, dialogue in small groups and becoming biblical characters.  Most participants found the model helpful in deepening their awareness of and relationship with others, including God. The project, working with a confirmation class, tried to provide a youth ministry program that enabled these young people to become active in the church and to grow spiritually.  Chapter one tells how the project began and describes the development of the youth ministry program (First Congregational Church, Greenfield, Mass).  Chapter two looks at the biblical, theological, and theoretical bases of youth ministry. Faith development and biblical themes are examined and definitions of spirituality are explored.  Chapter three evaluates the project and describes the enthusiasm of the congregation for an on-going ministry with youth. The specific goal of the project was the creation of guidelines relating to the faith development of children from birth to confirmation.  A shared praxis model was developed, using the work of Thomas Groome, allowing the local church board of deacons and Christian education to explore their own faith development in dialogue with recent writings in sacramental theology and faith development theory.  A basic assumption explored in the project is the ability of a lay group to do significant theological reflection.  The project affirms that in a local congregation theological reflection by the laity is essential in faith development and in keeping the hope and vision of the sacraments alive. The author recruits six United Methodist pastors to participate in a retreat and three reflection sessions.  Comparisons of pre-project and post-project impressions of participants indicate a genesis of community. Post-reflection reports reveal expanded insights into pastoral situations.
