Studies show that many believers consider themselves to be stalled in their spiritual growth and that they often view prayer as a duty rather than a delight. The purpose of this thesis-project is to explore the question of whether or not prayer that is based in an intimate relationship with God, using Scripture as its foundation, can make a significant impact on the spiritual growth of Christians. To this end, thirty-eight individuals participated in a six-week study using lectio divina in their personal prayer time. Of these, 95 percent reported some degree of spiritual growth. The author explores several roadblocks to spiritual formation such as functional Deism, family of origin issues, Old Covenant ministry practices, and the basic principles of the world, in an attempt to discover an effective way to deal with thsoe obstacles. He presents a theological backdrop for pastoral ministry that places relationship with God at the heart of the narrative, reviews writings of Gregory of Nyssa, Bernard of Clarvaux, Jonathan Edwards, and surveys germane material from neurobiology and attachmetn theorists. The author proposes a biblical, Christ-centered approach for understanding PSTD and finding healing. Biblical templates challenge traditional psychological interventions and pose the possibility of new constructs for understanding trauma. The author developed and administered a 23-item questionnaire to 165 recent combat veterans and conducted 30 interviews of soldiers who have served in either Iraq or Afghanistan. As a resource for an intentional, specialized approach to missionary preparation, a survey of relevant literature, a review of key socio-religious moments in the development of Pentecostalism in Russia, and an examination of theological concerns of the Orthodox context guides the reader toward a clearer understanding of Russian Pentecostals. This thesis-project shows how changes were made to the session of a PC(USA) congregation to attempt to improve effectiveness, and a policy manual growing from that experience was disseminated to other church leaders for their opinions. The researcher presents a theological motivation for churches to pursue changes in the leadership structure of the session. After examining modern and postmodern paradigms, the writer asserts that accommodations to the modern paradigm do not meet the demands and expectations of ministry in a postmodern context. The writer then proposes missional values and structures to enhance the effectiveness of the local church in the postmodern context. After interviewing ten Asian American churches in the northeastern United States in regards to their discipleship processes, and reviewing selected literature on discipleship, a process was developed. Churches in the United States often struggle to effectively equip believers with a strong foundation in the Word of God and to multiply by making disciples. The lack of relationships within the church body that encourage and guide spiritual formation, and discipleship that does not integrate transparent relationships, mutual accountability, and biblical truth, are part of the cause.
