A worship committee was organized and instructed in the Presbyterian Directory of Worship.  Surveys were distributed to families and small groups before and after two special worship series, to evaluate the congregation's worship life.  Each series responded to needs expressed in the initial survey. The remaining 400 churches were small churches. Therefore the research and study was designed to measure the effectiveness of the use of a conference in a small church for prayer and financial support and personal commitment for mission involvement.  A conference was proposed to the Chattanooga Valley Presbyterian Church; it was accepted.  A committee was formed to plan, promote and conduct a conference with a speaker and missionary guests. Research was performed in the area of public opinion, and an educational brochure was administered to a sample of fifty subjects along with a pre-test and post-test in the form of an opinion survey. The pastor and session proposed a hypothesis which was that the establishment of a positive sense of self-worth, which would come about as a result of better self-understanding, agreement of purpose and setting of goals, would reverse the decline.  The hypothesis was measured by surveys. Visible increased activity was noted as was a stronger financial picture, as well. The data was collected from sixty randomly selected ruling elders who answered the questionnaire.  It was discovered that there is a higher correlation between specific academic training and good performance than between life experiences and good performances.  One must not conclude that good academic training will cause outstanding elder performance. There may be a third factor influencing both.  A supplement to the study itself provides a theological framework for the raw data.
