Traditionally, the church recognizes and accepts the gifts of shouting, singing, and preaching but a major part of the congregation draws the line of acceptance with other gifts, such as prophecy or speaking in tongues, that have begun to manifest during services. This project assessed their academic, social, and spiritual formation necessary to maintain their cultural identity as they adapt to the American culture to discover how to help improve their self-esteem, to teach healthy relationships, and teach freedom from the need to oppress, control, or to feel superior to others. The data collected and analyzed discovered that these young Liberians surveyed had good attitudes toward their race and national identity as Liberians.  They feel loved by God and believed they are good persons. As a result all three groups of respondents (pastors, teachers, and students) believe that academic training and a curriculum grounded in the culture and experiences of our people is very important for the task of leadership training. Data was collected through surveys given pre, post, and four weeks after the study.  The results were tabulated to determine shifts towards diversity and inclusion.  The strongest shift occurred towards seeing diversity as a positive aspect of community. Participants took a quantitative pre-test assessing their level of spiritual strength before receiving training and experience in eight sessions.  Following the training, they took the quantitative post-test, which included qualitative questions.  The project was successful. Participants developed better understanding about the relationship between spiritual vitality, deep wounds, and formational prayer. Eleven participants met for twelve weeks.  A pre- and post-test questionnaire measured the effectiveness of their ability to minister healing.  Evaluation of the data showed the participants learned the healing paradigm. To measure the African Americans' influence in the Evangelical Covenant Church in the areas of worship, preaching, and social action, three survey instruments were designed and implemented. The worship survey was conducted among fifteen worship leaders. This group was chosen because they represent a cross-section of the denomination at large. The preaching survey was distributed to twenty-eight covenant preachers. This group was chosen based on this writer's knowledge of their ministry setting. The social action survey was designed to assess the African American social action influence. This survey was administered to six associate superintendents, three directors of church planting, and four superintendents, representing the eleven conference regions that comprise the Evangelical Covenant Church. This group was chosen because these individuals overseer more than 760 churches in the United States and Canada. This study will show how that The African American Christian influence is responsible for an expanding array of ministries at larger gatherings of the ECC and in local congregations. The researcher will conduct interviews to discuss coping mechanisms in personal and corporate crisis and develop a sermon series entitled: grace for the crisis. He will then measure modification in beliefs through a survey given to congregational and focus groups from within First United Methodist Church of Galesburg, Illinois.
