The project's methodology includes three goals: (1) to gain insight through a sampling survey; (2) to generate a set of aims for balancing content and application; (3) to preach twelve messages from Ephesians that model a balanced approach and to have six of those messages evaluated by church members. Once the research phase was completed, the materials were assembled into a seminar format.  The principles of adult education were followed and the project was field tested in a local congregation. The author examines the task of application from a historical, theological, and theoretical standpoint.  The focus of the study is twenty-four pastors from the Evangelical Free Church of America.  The author uses a content analysis approach to study the unique methods of application used by John Broadus, G Campbell Morgan, D Martyn Lloyd-Jones, and Charles Swindoll. Twelve methods of application are isolated from these four homileticians to develop a Methods of Application Self-Reporting Inventory.
