The author carried out projects with nurses, key partners with chaplains in patient care, to develop pathways to the sacred. Working with two groups of patients, the project tries both assessment methods and evaluates the results through patient surveys. The group receiving implicit assessment reports greater assistance with stress and physical recovery. The project finds that patients who attend more classes and a higher percentage of classes improve their Spiritual Assessment Scores (SAS), but a higher SAS does not lead to a shorter length of stay (LOS). Those who exhibit the greatest improvement in SAS do have a shorter LOS, primarily because they attend classes consistently.
