The author deals with the following issues: (1) The legitimacy of such dialog in the context of urban ministry, (2) the theological conception underlying such dialog (Paul Tillich's 'method of correlation,' and Douglas John Hall's conception of a contextualized theology), and (3) examples of such dialog that begins with novels of Philip Roth, Paul Auster, and John Updike. The author describes the reactions of a study group to whom he presented his ideas and whose participants consisted of active church members and church leaders (The Montreat study group). He also describes and analyzes the responses of ten secular persons--Germans and Americans--whom he asked to fill out a questionnaire (The Questionnaire). Finally, the author develops guidelines for a dialog-oriented, contextualized urban ministry."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791126798294056960,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:33:44.959Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:52:42Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:09:31Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b88b51b3-a1ea-413a-af6b-962bd5207367","accessControl_ssim":["4a06ca8e-f76a-4f95-97d4-9ea58abb85d2"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Nonformal pastoral ministry training in the majority world: four case studies"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:52:42Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:27:12Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["107b6786-f6f0-4397-88db-e6989428a58e"],"hasLease_ssim":["d0c64790-8348-4248-8cd1-44f1af0d544d"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Biblical Seminary and School of Missions"],"advisor_tesim":["Robert W Ferris"],"year_tesim":["2008"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["John Morrison Balmer"],"keyword_tesim":["Theology, Contextual"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Biblical Seminary and School of Missions of Columbia International University"],"subject_tesim":["Strategy","Developing countries","Case studies","Missions","Religious education"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this research is to study the programs of four indigenous, nonformal pastoral ministry training centers in the Majority World in order to identify core values, key principles, and training strategies. The research conclusions reflect various core values, key principles, and training methodologies and strategies as they are realized in the philosophy of the program design, the characteristics of the student population, the cultural context, the training needs of the target audience, the personalities and philosophies of the main leadership core staff, and other factors of the specific training institution. The final recommendations to educators in Majority World ministry training programs are: (1) develop a strong indigenous infrastructure before launching the program, (2) avoid dependence on foreign funding and expatriate faculty, and (3) develop a healthy training model that plans for measured growth. Therefore, any ministry training program should not be uncritically transported to cultural contexts in the Majority World without contextualizing the curriculum and program design."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129053087924224,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:09:35.299Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:45:59Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:03:58Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"81186918-d948-4b72-86f9-1c0e42432740","accessControl_ssim":["75344e7a-9de4-40d5-a32d-761ff485add6"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Bamboo, borders, and bricks: theology building for housing improvements with Lao refugees in Fresno, California"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:45:59Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:56:27Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["dc468d4b-9b1f-46e2-8a26-326cd1b35d7a"],"hasLease_ssim":["52aa107c-f722-4a6f-acbe-28a81524f800"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Carlos F Cardoza-Orlandi"],"year_tesim":["2008"],"location_tesim":["California--Fresno"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Sharon G Stanley"],"keyword_tesim":["Refugees, Laotian","Theology, Contextual"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church and social problems","Housing","Refugees","Laotians"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project raised perspectives of Christian immigrants in the United States by developing a theology building process appropriate to the social, cultural, and multi-religious backgrounds of Lao refugees in Fresno, California. The research identified, described, and held in conversation three influential contexts of 'bamboo, borders, and bricks' for Lao theology, and applied these contexts to create Christian responses to poor housing through biblical and folk stories, re-worked housing rituals, and community organizing with artistic poetry, songs, and visuals.
