How could a congregation move from benevolent benefactor toward missional accompaniment? Surveys and an interview measured the impact of three interventions, Bible study, testimony, and prayer. Theological and Biblical perspectives included missional ecclesiology, accompaniment, spiritual practices, and liberation theology. Theoretical perspectives included post-colonial theory, change theory, and cross-cultural communication. A training manual for pastors and elders of DCU Kampala cluster of churches was developed following an investigation of Scripture and a literature review on pertinent subjects. Contextualization was attempted by integrating Ugandan stories, illustrations, case studies, examples, words, figures of speech, and cultural values and norms into the training materials and the implementation process, without compromising the precedence of Scripture. Lead pastors were challenged to design and implement a 52-week program for transforming their congregations and to do so under the mentorship of the author for the first six months. Questionnaires were used to evaluate the training materials and mentoring period. Results show that the trainees acquired valuable knowledge and skills, were motivated and challenged, and, in some cases, felt that they were given a fresh lease of life. The lead pastors are cultivating an outward focus in their mission and vision, with a view of transforming their communities with the gospel."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c654e922-76d0-4427-ac29-e286b7997781"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799720929905868800,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:13:47.549Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:27:41Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:38:46Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"c3d2a40a-6e98-4a31-b0bd-f9c4c7f6be2b","accessControl_ssim":["c9b62b83-c66d-4408-bce1-71433ceaeb4a"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Effective strategies for cross culture/cross linguistic ministry to Chinese students/scholars in the United States"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:27:40Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:45:28Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5b697f8e-bec7-4f9c-9173-d67f7e8c38d7"],"hasLease_ssim":["418484da-c00e-4bbc-8411-544ac23e561c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Michael Pocock","Kenneth G Hanna"],"year_tesim":["2012"],"location_tesim":["United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Jiaxian Tao"],"keyword_tesim":["Theology, Contextual"],"publisher_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Christianity and culture","Christians","Asian Americans--Religion","Church work with immigrants"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project did a case study to find out the factors which enhance cross culture/cross language ministries among the Chinese new immigrants, students, and visiting scholars in the United States. The author deals with the following issues: (1) The legitimacy of such dialog in the context of urban ministry, (2) the theological conception underlying such dialog (Paul Tillich's 'method of correlation,' and Douglas John Hall's conception of a contextualized theology), and (3) examples of such dialog that begins with novels of Philip Roth, Paul Auster, and John Updike. The author describes the reactions of a study group to whom he presented his ideas and whose participants consisted of active church members and church leaders (The Montreat study group). He also describes and analyzes the responses of ten secular persons--Germans and Americans--whom he asked to fill out a questionnaire (The Questionnaire). The research conclusions reflect various core values, key principles, and training methodologies and strategies as they are realized in the philosophy of the program design, the characteristics of the student population, the cultural context, the training needs of the target audience, the personalities and philosophies of the main leadership core staff, and other factors of the specific training institution. The final recommendations to educators in Majority World ministry training programs are: (1) develop a strong indigenous infrastructure before launching the program, (2) avoid dependence on foreign funding and expatriate faculty, and (3) develop a healthy training model that plans for measured growth. Therefore, any ministry training program should not be uncritically transported to cultural contexts in the Majority World without contextualizing the curriculum and program design."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129053087924224,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:09:35.299Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:45:59Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:03:58Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"81186918-d948-4b72-86f9-1c0e42432740","accessControl_ssim":["75344e7a-9de4-40d5-a32d-761ff485add6"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Bamboo, borders, and bricks: theology building for housing improvements with Lao refugees in Fresno, California"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:45:59Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:56:27Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["dc468d4b-9b1f-46e2-8a26-326cd1b35d7a"],"hasLease_ssim":["52aa107c-f722-4a6f-acbe-28a81524f800"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Carlos F Cardoza-Orlandi"],"year_tesim":["2008"],"location_tesim":["California--Fresno"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Sharon G Stanley"],"keyword_tesim":["Refugees, Laotian","Theology, Contextual"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church and social problems","Housing","Refugees","Laotians"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project raised perspectives of Christian immigrants in the United States by developing a theology building process appropriate to the social, cultural, and multi-religious backgrounds of Lao refugees in Fresno, California. It includes documentary and field research. The samples in the survey are 200 students from four Bible colleges in Thailand. The survey also sets a random example from the designed group in order to compare the results with those 200 students.
