The spiritual development of individual members of a rural Presbyterian congregation and the spiritual enrichment of the community of faith at large, as observed by the pastor, is explored utilizing the heuristic model of an apple orchard. The comparison of the nurture of trees and enrichment of individuals and congregation employs the praxis circle of practical theology as delineated by James Poling and Donald Miller. In doing so the praxis circle begins with the experience of the individuals, describes and evaluates the two opposing theologies within the congregation, seeks to find correlation of creation-centered theology and Reformed theology in secular disciplines, ecclesiastical mandates, and denominational documents, which gives rise to new guidelines and practices for the faith community and its members. It is affirmed that the heuristic model of an apple orchard is helpful to describe spiritual development."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791126105621528576,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:22:44.376Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:49:54Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:59:35Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"85327c12-30dc-4d9b-b092-110bfa913ecf","accessControl_ssim":["95861e97-c732-4429-b948-defd448f72bb"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Generating Reformed spiritual formation in a bicultural context"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:49:53Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:03:27Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["e24a98ea-9499-4974-8598-a17e3c5781af"],"hasLease_ssim":["609c0598-6899-471b-a34a-93de71f47b15"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Anna Case-Winters"],"year_tesim":["1993"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Robert C Malcolm"],"keyword_tesim":["Theology, Reformed"],"publisher_tesim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Spiritual formation","Theology","Cross-cultural studies"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Christian formation is at once a corporate and personal response to God in public and private life. What is essentially lacking is an appreciation for encountering God in religious experience. This project examines the importance of primary knowledge of God through mystical religious experience. Chapter 1 addresses the theological basis for encountering God within the context of Jungian psychology, William James and the Western Christian tradition. Ultimately a theology of the Christian mystical experience of union with God is framed within the Reformed positions of John Calvin and Karl Barth. The minister's role as a spiritual director is examined in chapter 2. Group experiences are suggested as an alternative or prelude to the one-on-one relationship. Selection of a curriculum and lesson plans for a spiritual encounter group are submitted in chapter 3. The story of the formation of a spiritual encounter group is told in chapter 4. Overall, the conclusions drawn value the learning experience of the project as a success for both the author and the class participants."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["0f245891-e4c1-47d9-842b-9aefbafae138"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135340319211520,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:49:31.270Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T00:21:56Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:27:36Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ea2e0865-da94-4f96-81e1-68d98352393e","accessControl_ssim":["877f189c-6dac-43e1-bb58-681f7ff92775"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Power encounter in selected writings of the Princeton theologians"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T00:21:55Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:50:11Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a3fc800d-0d19-442a-a1fc-bb67d8f77254"],"hasLease_ssim":["49dae4a5-1f08-4277-875c-c2bf29e69119"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["David J Hesselgrave"],"year_tesim":["1988"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Edward N Gross"],"keyword_tesim":["Theology, Reformed"],"publisher_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School of Trinity International University"],"subject_tesim":["Power (Christian theology)","Miracles","Theologians","Demonology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The project was based on a review of the current literature regarding 'power encounter', and its elements which it contains: miracles, evil spirits and deliverance. The project also researched the writings of the major Princeton theologians: Alexander, the Hodges, and Warfield, noting the many references they made to the elements of power encounter. The Princetonians wrote from a Reformed and exegetical perspective. The author concludes that the Princetonians offer much needed biblical counsel regarding power encounter. Miracles are not denied; but, miraculous gifts are refuted for the post-apostolic church upon biblical grounds. Great care must be taken in verifying alleged miracles. The Princetonians supply the church with valuable counsel in the whole verification process."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c654e922-76d0-4427-ac29-e286b7997781"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799721800089731072,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:27:37.422Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T00:12:35Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:36:05Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a28cf44d-587d-434f-89fa-be49b01a87d6","accessControl_ssim":["57b6e3f9-3079-4381-a406-44049a0e01ba"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Congregation and eschatology: an exploration of the eschatological consciousness of the Presbyterian Church, Farmington, Missouri"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T00:12:35Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:52:04Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["62507d5b-22bc-4745-adbb-68483001beb7"],"hasLease_ssim":["2117a5f7-4244-4a11-8889-10c6daaee64f"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["John S McClure"],"year_tesim":["1989"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Geary N Scott"],"keyword_tesim":["Theology, Reformed"],"publisher_tesim":["Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Presbyterian Church","Lord's Supper","Eschatology","Presbyterian Church--Hymns","Liturgics"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project explores a Presbyterian congregation's eschatological consciousness, looks at eschatology from a Reformed perspective, analyzes the eschatological images put forth by the hymns in The Hymnbook and in the liturgies of The Worshipbook, articulates the author's eschatology, and explores ways the eschatological side of the gospel can be communicated in a Presbyterian congregation. The congregation of 175 was analyzed by interviews with 68 of its members. These interviews allowed a glimpse of the variety of eschatological symbols and images prevalent in a Presbyterian congregation.
