Employing key concepts of liberation theology introduced by Gustavo Gutierrez, as well as the theological reflections of Walter Brueggemann, Jurgen Moltmann and several Christian feminist theologians, the author argues that 'the unborn represent an oppressed class in need of relief.'  The rights of the unborn should be framed within the larger discussion of liberation theology, rather than being limited to medical, biological, or social concerns that fail to account for the biblical and theological affirmations of human life. The result is an abandonment by the ELCA of sinners to their own devices, rather than a call to repentance and the Word of encouragement to the amendment of life.  ELCA preachers can and must preach to this situation for the sake of implicated sinners.
