The research director researched the field of elder care and identified the best practices and developed materials to assist in the training of the selected participants. The director then used these materials to develop a four-session workshop whose subjects included: 'What is a caregiver?,' 'Suddenly you are a caregiver,' 'Encouraging spiritual growth,' and 'Creating a care plan.' A support group and study group was used.  The support met and studied.  The study group studied material alone. Pre-tests and post-tests were given to both.  The study group performed on the tests as well as the support group. It helps adult children understand that an elderly parent's problem behavior can be based on discouragement.  Behavioral modification methods can be used to lend encouragement to elderly parents, to build better family relationships, to support the elderly's decision-making, and to enable them to sustain and deepen faith in God. Included is the study of thirty-one women from a suburban Roman Catholic church, the subsequent presentation of findings on a matrix, and four case studies of women who showed a predominance in one of the phases of individuation, i.e., symbiosis, practicing, individuation, or distancing. The results support the hypothesis that the relationship of middle age women to their mothers bears similarities to their separation-individuation process in their early years of
