A variety of methods (combining both qualitative and quantitative) with an emphasis on the ethnographic methodology eliciting emic views have been used to gather descriptive data. In addition, historical archival research was conducted to examine the Chinese and Christianity and the Chinese diaspora in general. Emerging cultural themes enabled the analysis of opportunities and threats to reach the Chinese diaspora in Africa. Kohut's theory has been repeatedly appropriated by pastoral counselors, but Barth's theology has seldomly been applied to pastoral care and counseling. While both theories are 'logically diverse,' each offers a relational perspective that is essential to human existence. After an in-depth analysis of RET, the study examines the difference between a scientific and a theological methodology and reviews the theological method of Bernard Lonergan.  Building upon Lonergan's thesis that a person needs to accept the responsibility to transform him/herself, his/her worlds, and his/her meanings, the dissertation examines a Pauline anthropology to consider the possibilities to equip persons with cognitive insights so that they might be able to do so.
