The author argues that in order for nurses to deliver comprehensive, holistic care of persons with cancer, nurse educators must modify their curricula and clinical training programs.  She urges educators to include a historical perspective of who nurses have been throughout the history of the Christian church, encourage spiritual self-exploration and training in their students, and reclaim the work of the forerunner of spiritual care in nursing, Florence Nightingale. Thirty cancer patients were interviewed using questionnaires: one gathered personal background and medical information and the other assessed spiritual well-being.  The findings indicated that religious beliefs were significant.  Daily prayer was associated with spiritual well-being, but religious affiliation and church attendance were not. It used a case study method that observed ten spouses of deceased cancer patients.  The author planned and implemented the pilot project to meet the needs of the spouses.  He conducted five training sessions with three spouses and took each spouse to visit two other bereaved spouses.  The project included the trainees' views about the development of a lay grief counselor network.
