The focus was to create community through a process of dialogue in an effort to define the meaning of patient focused care.  As the organization was undergoing considerable crisis (provoked in part by fiscal restraints at the time), a special emphasis was placed on organizational grief.  The two domains engaged in the study were from organizational development, specifically the work of Peter Senge as it applies to organizational learning and pastoral ministry in the context of a Critical Care Unit in crisis.  The findings validate the learning organization as a concept in support of change and empowerment. In addition, a theological/pastoral perspective, while recognizing the value of the organic, relational nature of organizational design, pointed to the need for the development of personal awareness, as an issue of capacity for relationship in organizational learning. Chapter 1 presents the report of the US Surgeon, C Everett Koop, as to the medical myths and facts about AIDS, and the unsuccessful attempts of Elizabeth Kubler-Ross to build a local clinic for children with AIDS.  Chapter 2 gives a biblical, theological, and historical view of the treatment of lepers, a metaphor chosen for modern AIDS patients. Chapter 3 offers a description of an eight-week program designed to reduce the resistance staff members feel toward AIDS patients and the research instruments used to measure the effects of the group. These workshops were designed to foster continuing education and personal growth relating to grief and anger issues faced in the hospital context.  Preworkshop and postworkshop questionnaires were used to gather information.  The preworkshop questionnaires showed an adequate understanding of both anger and grief.  The postworkshop questionnaires showed an increase in the understanding of both emotions plus more confidence in working with people expressing
