Borgmann believes the most concrete expression of technology is the device that delivers a commodity with minimal involvement in the processes that create that commodity. Consumers in a technological culture default to a 'device paradigm' that shapes their worldview and drives them to commoditize focal realities and sacred things. People expect to enjoy thick spiritual experiences without participating in the processes that create and cultivate such experiences. The author suggests strategies to temper the device paradigm in American evangelical churches."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["910240dd-6bfb-49cb-ab06-1b8de036aac8"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132134714376192,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:58:34.166Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:56:07Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:28:05Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"cce51770-cec1-46ad-a3ff-dc102d398e72","accessControl_ssim":["92550cac-0e21-4dc6-91f4-f178b7e7aba6"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A Christian/Muslim dialogue in prison: praxis of faith for survival and liberaton"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:56:07Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:00:57Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["8102ac8e-e2fc-4efb-b23b-2389663b2251"],"hasLease_ssim":["64ee8167-bd54-4bca-9fc4-42a00e4e2b33"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Hartford Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Jane I Smith"],"year_tesim":["2007"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Lawrence E Lucas"],"publisher_tesim":["Hartford Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Christian sociology","Church work with prisoners","Prisons and prisoners--United States","African American","African Americans--Religion","Sociology, Islamic"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["When minorities from a Christian heritage background become enthralled in the criminal justice system, there is a tendency to convert to Islam. The writer decided to conduct a study that would center on the sharing of testimonies or spiritual journeys by a select sample of prisoners. For twelve weeks, 20 African-American men--10 Christians and 10 Muslims--poured their hearts out and shared their experiences of spiritual transformation, not only as individuals but also as persons of faith. The African American experience revealed that Islam has better served incarcerated persons than the Black church. The reasons are: 1. Islam has been more visibly available both inside and outside the prison. 2. Islam provides protection and community life. 3. Islam serves a a counter culture to the regimentation of institutionalization and provides a survival mode for the incarcerated not readily recognized within the Christianity of the Black church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Hartford Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8e52e4c8-38b6-4846-872d-a744b4f5725d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799721830487949312,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:28:06.412Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:00:16Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:09:14Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e85d849e-b743-4a00-83a0-a8f0f127a557","accessControl_ssim":["5314aba1-3169-4704-b302-317245775f72"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A search for myth and metanarrative in films popular among college students: an alternative model for Christian evaluation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:00:16Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:46:58Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["acd9b105-3b9d-40d9-aec2-1b4c99d9699b"],"hasLease_ssim":["4bf69d52-7d6b-42ca-a40a-33a164f04e40"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Gary Parrett"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Jimmy E Gulledge"],"keyword_tesim":["Films--Study and teaching"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Christian sociology","Sire, James W","Evaluation--Methodology","Campbell, Joseph, 1904-1987"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The thesis of this work is that the use of MPAA ratings to evaluate films for Christian youth is inadequate. The project identifies the most popular films of a sample population of college students. The worldview of each film is examined using guided philosophical questions based on James Sire's work The Universe Next Door. Next, the mythological and theological frameworks of the films are examined using a Christian modification of mythologist's Joseph Campbell's journey of the hero.
