Qualitative focus group interviews were used with leaders from four engaged neighboring OPC and PCA churches and with leaders of two non-engaged churches. Five factors were identified as encouraging or discouraging local ICR. How congregations do or do not engage reflects what leaders believe about the nature and unity of the church. This basis was applied to action research wherein the researcher taught and evaluated a course on cross-cultural leadership to a class of prospective cross-cultural leaders (students) at Calvary Bible College. Christian unity and disunity are presented in an historical and developmental overview. Four current models of ecumenism are outlined in contrast to COCU's covenanting model.  A questionnaire was used to gauge grassroots awareness of COCU, concern for Christian unity, and openess to COCU's proposal.  Resulting data indicate a desire for Christian unity (with some latitude in its definition), little knowledge of COCU, and an audience receptive to COCU's work. A review of recent literature reveals the evaluation of the Prayer Summit movement, city-wide crusades and other efforts to come together.  The acceptance of diversity and its relation to changes in our society is also discussed. Several key passages in the Bible are examined to determine the key principles for unity to occur among believers and the place diversity has in that experience.  A survey was conducted of pastors in the writer's local community to identify the current perspective of unity with diversity. Basic beliefs are delineated that are viewed as essential for unity as well as a clarification of the issues that are understood as acceptable areas of diversity in the Body of Christ. Qualitative, feminist methodology was used to design a process which included storytelling, theological reflection and social analysis.  Participating in the research were women from Roman Catholic and Protestant denominations.
