A ministry model is developed based on the author's experience of an unusually high number of divorces in a church where he served; an analysis of biblical teaching on marriage, divorce, and remarriage; interviews with divorced Christians active in local churches; interviews with pastors and parachurch workers who have experience counseling the divorced; and research in the field. The development of the model also drew from an analysis of a local parachurch divorce recovery ministry and from research on the social and psychological impact of divorce on the church. Several misconceptions are revealed about the divorce experience, social consequences, and ministry to the divorced. Outlines are used to develop a paradigm for ministry to the divorced and remarried that can be used by evangelical churches with varying theological assumptions about divorce, as well as by churches of varying sizes."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130781881466880,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:37:04.005Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:25:05Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:54:25Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"581fa46b-b7c0-4871-a79b-9a6d84d6c696","accessControl_ssim":["edf953c3-80b1-4e6f-b3d3-cc6fee0ddf4d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["An effective model of church ministry for divorced young adults in Korea"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:25:04Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:43:05Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["fc47b0bb-5463-4341-9f3f-632e048de3f8"],"hasLease_ssim":["1ea19f60-d6e2-4106-b21b-78637ec062cf"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Michael Mata"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"location_tesim":["Korea (South)"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Won Seok Sim"],"publisher_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Church work with divorced people","Social conditions","Church work with young adults","Economic conditions"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Most Korean churches and pastors recognize that they need a church ministry model for divorced young adults in Korea. Many Korean scholars and pastors are prone to prohibit divorced people from actively participating in the life of the church because scholars and pastors perceive this as God's will. One of the major obstacles to ministering to divorced young adults in Korea is the secular view of the world. Most Korean adults grew up in the Confucian culture, a patriarchal system. This means that women are marginalized and are powerless people in Korean society. In this system, divorce does not exist because women do not have rights as humans, the constituting members of society. However, contemporary young adults grow up in a culture influenced by the western lifestyle, which has a system that believes that men and women are equal. Divorce is a common thing for young adults as a choice for a better life. The Korean churches and their pastors should work on overcoming the generation gap in the conception of divorce. In ancient times women did not have the same rights as they have now. Moses put the law in the book of Deuteronomy to protect women's rights. St. Paul in his letters shows that men and women have equal rights as human beings because God makes us as equal creatures, and that men and women are both children of God. Current Korean congregations, in order to prepare for God's work, must face two conflicting problems in Korean society: the cultural values held by its older members, and the reality of a rapid increase in the annual divorce rate. The Korean church needs to provide a social-spiritual shelter for divorced young adults who, otherwise, would not associate with Korean congregations. If provided shelter, the divorced young adults will stay as vital members of the church, which then will make a brighter future for the Korean church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131876751048704,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:54:28.154Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:00:14Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:45:07Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a947fceb-5ca8-4db7-b6b6-bf11c4410290","accessControl_ssim":["3a90c992-82de-4de6-b547-9b054c36dced"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Ministering to the divorced/separated from a reformed evangelical perspective in the military chaplaincy"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:00:13Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:02:03Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["23f0d040-ec72-4417-8fe2-3b572c9bd707"],"hasLease_ssim":["00c965aa-b836-4fe0-9e1a-7f204d25eaf4"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Paul Kooistra"],"year_tesim":["1992"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["C Robert Beede"],"publisher_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church work with divorced people","Reformed Church","Military chaplains","Spiritual life--Christianity","Reformed Church--Social teachings","Pastoral counseling--Study and teaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this project was to examine the needs of and help formulate a support group based on the emotional and spiritual needs of people experiencing recently broken marital relationships.
