The Reclaiming Wholistic Health and Well-Being Clergy Women's Health Initiative utilized a covenant peer group model, an overnight retreat, health professional/spiritual director consultations, and an online and in person communication forums to facilitate theological reflection and engagement in spiritual disciplines to cultivate healthy habits in five dimensions of health: spiritual, physical, emotional, social, and financial. Ideally, an in-person group brings the best results for accountability; however, online groups have much to offer in the relief of isolation. The literature focuses on spiritual self-care for ministers, overlooking the value and simplicity of the pastor caring for himself physically. In order to help pastors sustain leadership in local church ministry, physical self-care practices were identified which contributed to pastors sustaining themselves in leadership. The findings of this study were that pastors who engaged in physical self-care practices may be better equipped to endure stress and challenges in ministry. This correlation is explored through lenses of sports medicine, health and wellness, Native American and New Age practices, homiletics, and feminist theology. The author researched this matter through a combination of group meetings, questionnaires, and conversations with laity and clergypersons. The project ends with recommendations for Union Grove and future pastors on enhancing the pastor's health and the importance of the pastors accepting personal responsibility for maintaining their own healthy lifestyle.
