The assessment of the project included the administration of both a pre-test and a post-test questionnaire. The goal with the highest results revealed an increased awareness of listening as an active form of communication. Increased awareness as to the role active listening plays in achieving successful outcomes was also noted. It presents the challenge for pastors preaching sermons to people from multiple language groups by examining the ingredients of communication and presenting an approach to preparing and delivering sermons. Preaching in English where multiple language groups are present is the resulting seminar that teaches a system of preparing sermons. The preparation of a sermon involves a six step process which is listener-focused. The pastor's effective delivery of these sermons requires an understanding of how verbal and nonverbal categories of preaching will impact listeners of different ethnic groups. Preaching extemporaneously allows the minister to sustain eye contact with listeners and it also enables the preacher's speech patterns to be more conversational and hence more alive, and immediate, appealing to post modern audiences. Much has been written about extemporaneous preaching but there is a dearth of comprehensive and consistent information on how to do it. The thesis of this project is that various authors who have written methodologies on how to preach without notes can be synthesized into a comprehensive and usable application for preaching without notes. Data from listeners in a congregation suggests that preaching that is engaging and immediate is favored whether from notes or not. Specifically, this research sought to confirm the hypothesis that the essential principles of visual communication--rhythm, contrast, balance, proportion and unity--are applicable to verbal communication as well.  The research first surveys relevant literature in fields of visual and verbal communication and then noted the principles within the biblical text.  From this review, an evaluation instrument was designed.  Then, three preachers were selected and their sermons transcribed and evaluated according to a validation grid.
