Through semi-structured interviews, respondents reported less overt homophobia in AAPC than heterosexism. Data obtained suggests the presence of the negative effects of heterosexism on collegial relationships, pastoral counselor training, and the membership process.  Overt homophobia was experienced within local agencies affiliated with AAPC and in the institutional church. Lesbian, gay, and bisexual persons have been placed into the role of the bearer of sexual shame and have been the object of projection, discrimination, and prejudice.  Through the use of structural family therapy, combined with concepts from various family systems theories and object relations theory, homophobia in the church is analyzed.  This analysis leads to a theology and psychology of liberation, empowering lesbian/gay/bisexual and heterosexual persons to change the structures of homophobia into structures of liberation.  Through 15 in-depth interviews this project relates the experiences of persons in a liberation worshipping community in New Hampshire.
