Family homework assignments reinforce the monthly sessions. After two years the participating families are strongly committed to this alternative program, and it is being expanded in its third year. The primary concern of the research was to ascertain current levels of moral development and to determine if the curricula in the three schools studied was effective in meeting the moral developmental needs of students.  Data was obtained from the results of the Kohlberg Moral Development Test, Form A. The results of this thesis shed light on the effectiveness of ethical teaching within the school systems studied. The textbook was designed to serve two functions: 1) to convey information from the Jewish traditional literature on Tzedaka, and 2) to modify student behaviors from non-Tzedaka-prone to Tzedaka-prone. By examining theories on the formation of Jewish identity, this study underscores the primary role of the family in the creation of Jewish identity.  The study looks at the Jewish family from historical and sociological perspectives and investigates the contemporary situation of the American Jewish family.
