Trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder in the experience of disasters, especially as they relate to loss of place, are studied. Identification with place and the loss of place in the Katrina disaster are examined, specifically at Grace Episcopal Church and the Mid-City neighborhood. It provides an ideological critique of the four religious movements in American Jewry.  The study presents a sociological view of the nature of synagogue affiliation and the motivations and influences of synagogue membership.  It compares data on the American Jewry experience with affiliation data of other dominant religions represented in the United States. The majority of the project is dedicated to the needs assessment survey distributed to members of six synagogues in southern New Jersey.
