Soldiers were administered a pre-test/posttest quantitative design to measure the differences that came from participating in the four-week prayer project aimed at premeditating combat experiences. The project discovered improvements in spiritual and relational well-being based on the participant's responses, including greater knowledge of the biblical laments, increased positive relationship with oneself, God and others. Preaching a lament opens listeners to deal with the real issues that burden them.  This thesis proposes specifically the reclaiming of the psalms of lament in preaching following the homiletic design for celebration of Frank Thomas.  With this integration the preacher is both the leader of lament and celebrant of God's presence. A lectionary study book on suffering and three specific psalms was prepared.  A diverse group of pastors was recruited to take part in the study and preach a three-Sunday sermon series on three lament psalms.  The goal was to move congregants from cultural forms of denial of suffering to a biblical theology of communicating suffering.  Response cards indicated that 40% of the respondents changed their beliefs regarding God and suffering. It is based on the premise that there is a great deal of pain in the world both in individuals and in society. Our failure to acknowledge our pain and offer it to God in worship is detrimental to the building of community in the church and to our relationship with God. Conversely, when we preach, pray and sing laments in keeping with biblical tradition, individuals may find healing and the community may grow in compassion. Reclaiming lament is important to preaching as an antidote to the denial of pain seen in some forms of worship. Old Testament scholars, particularly Walter Brueggemann, worship-theologians and pastoral care scholars affirm the positive aspects of the lament tradition. My method was to demonstrate lament in preaching, prayers and music.
