His congregation is made up of soldiers who are twenty to twenty-two and do not like the army life.  However, the soldiers encounter religions by choice in the military service.  Many soldiers come into contact with Christianity.  The author has thought about what these young soldiers want in their own spiritual lives and how the military church can help them. The author therefore asked the following questions regarding military mission in the light of pastoral care: (1) What is the meaning of military service for men, and what is the meaning of the period of military service in the life cycle?  (2) What is the soldiers' life before enrollment in military service, and what do they think of their lives after their service is completed? Knowing where a congregation is in its life cycle permits interventions to be made to alter its path. The purpose of this project is to give the clergyperson, in this case the rabbi, an appreciation for the religious rite of passage as well as an understanding of its psychoanalytical origins and interpersonal implications.  The project outlines the traditional Jewish approaches as well as the human and practical realities of three particular rites of passage. It uses this model for the pastoral assessment of congregational families with regard to life cycle issues.  The author hypothesizes that the model may be useful in identifying families who risk having difficulty with life cycle transitions and situational crises.  He shows how the family wellness program 'Understanding Us,' which is based on the circumplex model, can be a vehicle for such assessment.
