This research project seeks to establish the value of lament rituals to promote self-awareness and grief expression for medical staff as they serve patients in Palliative Care, Intensive Care and Emergency Rooms, by witnessing and experiencing the provision of lament rituals to medical professional staff by spiritual care. Spirituality provides a safe space for medical professional staff to explore their own sources of hope while confronting illness in the journey of life. A qualitative methodology using observation, narratives, face-to-face interviews, and a survey was employed. The findings suggest systemic and organizational issues concerning policies and procedures which include a neglect and lack of positive rewards, reduced staffing and high turnover rates, differing approaches to care planning, constant policy changes, lost leadership, and staff refusal to float. The project director also assisted the project participants in the application of Christian theology to their daily hospice service.  In order to achieve this, the project director wrote an eleven-unit biblical reference booklet for the participants and led them in ten related devotions.  The director used tests and conversational questions to evaluate the ministry intervention. One hundred health care workers were presented with twenty-two cases requiring both an action decision and a value justification for the action.  This test was given pre and post a six-week course in perinatal management. The major intent was to help persons to own and express their anger.  A biblical and theoretical study was made on the subject of anger. The results of the study were then presented to a group of thirteen individuals through the use of lectures, discussions, and self-help groups. Chapter 1 presents the report of the US Surgeon, C Everett Koop, as to the medical myths and facts about AIDS, and the unsuccessful attempts of Elizabeth Kubler-Ross to build a local clinic for children with AIDS.  Chapter 2 gives a biblical, theological, and historical view of the treatment of lepers, a metaphor chosen for modern AIDS patients. Chapter 3 offers a description of an eight-week program designed to reduce the resistance staff members feel toward AIDS patients and the research instruments used to measure the effects of the group. The project involved a six-session, twelve-hour educational seminar.  The seminar investigated a clinical definition of religion, the relationship between religion and culture, and religion's relationship with Axis I and Axis II DSM-IIIR diagnoses. It concluded by addressing psychiatric assessment skills in the area of religion. A pretest-posttest failed to demonstrate conclusively that the seminar participants gained a clinical understanding of a psychiatric patient's religious
