More than 70,000 persons visited the church in 1995, and its varied use by community groups and agencies, its status on the National Register of Historic Places since 1980, and its preparation to become a National Historic Landmark are indications that the 15 September 1963 bombing of the church has changed its ministry. Cherye offers ethical, social, and religious functions in Korean-American society: order, community, transformation. The project employs literature research to formulate a theological basis, interviews to determine congregational needs, and field study to apply parish context. The author bases his thesis on the life and teachings of Pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who was martyred for his involvement in resistance to Adolf Hitler.  Research centers on the history of antisemitism in the church and on works by Jewish and Christian post-Holocaust theologians.
