Chapter 1 introduces the thesis statement, ministry needs, literature review, and theological issues with regard to evangelizing the Navajos. Chapter 2 introduces their history and worldview. Chapter 3 introduces their indigenous religious rituals, their use of witchcraft, and their use of peyote in their religion. Chapter 4 describes how Christians can connect with the Navajos and how Christians can apply biblical texts to evangelize the Navajos. Numerous cultural challenges, as well as a deficiency in theological foundations (particularly one that is distinctively Wesleyan-Arminian) warrant such a study. Both a biblical understanding of the church and a clarification of the historical understanding of the role of the pastor comprises the foundation upon which a culturally relevant pastoral theology may be articulated. Therefore, this project proposes: first, to communicate an internally consistent understanding of classical pastoral theology--a Wesleyan-Arminian perspective. Secondly, a strategy is included that is culturally appropriate for Navajo leadership. The result is a course unit which integrates pastoral theology addressing specifically Navajo culture.
