This fundamental disconnect threatens to leave the church impotent to walk alongside and impact its unchurched neighbors. This author proposes a common denominator for the community and the Gathered Church, namely, Intercessory Prayer. Through planning and implementation of five public Intercessory Prayer activities with internal complements, the author details the re-introduction of relationship-building, mutual vulnerability, and authentic connection between those inside and outside the walls of the church. He sought to determine centering prayer's efficacy in alleviating perceived stress using Thomas Keating's method of centering prayer and drawing from the contemplative lives of John of the Cross, Therese of Lisieux, and Thomas Merton. Centering prayer was conducted on site one day a week for an hour at a time over a four week period. This knowledge must be accompanied by a fervent prayer life specifically directed at outreach. Surveys were conducted of visitors and members to establish an understanding of their understanding of how the congregation is viewed from those who are not part of its culture and from those who are. Evaluative research methodology was used for the design and implementation of this project, taking a small group on a Prayer Journey. Scriptures on Jesus' prayer practices were studied. Participants were to read about prayer, practice, update their journals, and share. Data analysis included a pre- and post-project survey to assess the participants' learning. Results indicated a deepened understanding about prayer and a desire to follow Jesus's examples. The method was to establish two centering prayer groups meeting for six weeks to engage in centering prayer daily with weekly group meetings. To evaluate the effectiveness of centering prayer practice, pre-centering prayer and post-centering prayer surveys were conducted to determine stress changes noted due to the centering prayer.
