While America has prided itself on its democratic ideal and its churches have sought to solve social justice problems, racial injustice continues to frustrate unity and trust among the races. Through education, cross-racial appointments, interracial dialogues, marches and rallies, the church has voiced its intolerance of racial injustice. The purpose of this paper is to provide another way clergy and the church may address the race problem. This new way presupposes a correlation between the Christian faith (the philosophy of nonviolence expounded by Dr Martin Luther King, Jr) and analytical psychology (Carl G Jung's concepts of the 'shadow' and to a lesser degree the 'self'). To a lesser degree the paper suggests, with Dr King as a prime example, that the degree to which one is able to realize the 'self' has a positive impact on one's public and private life, and the spirit of America as a whole. This paper concludes with some clues to enhance the growth of the ministering person and the effectiveness of one's ministry with respect to racial equality."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134169990955008,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:30:55.158Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:30:59Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:15:04Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"24974d8b-b041-4fac-bb14-b18158de0489","accessControl_ssim":["d50215bf-1f30-4bdb-976f-2c39c602fe68"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Some pastoral implications of Jung's concept of 'shadow'"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:30:58Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:12:45Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["df47abe9-86a2-4a8e-ae9c-709e4bd6fbe1"],"hasLease_ssim":["2a358570-79ea-4307-b175-d44dba92a8cd"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["John R Higgins"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Genia M Haddon"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Shadow (Psychoanalysis)","Jung, C. It focuses on the Shadow, an aspect of human nature and a source of difficulty for the Christian church which has not been dealt with realistically. Jung's concept of the Shadow is examined. Examples of the operation of the Shadow include: the Iranian hostage crisis, the Crusades, the Inquisition, the Salem witch trials, the moral majority, the Ku Klux Klan. A biographical incident is recounted. The traditional anti-Shadow position of the Christian church is described, with examples of theological, doctrinal, moral-ethical, liturgical and architectural over-emphasis on the white-bright-light side. The consequence of over-valuing of purity is described: a repressed Shadow which operates secretly from the unconscious, producing various unwholesome effects. A theological-psychological model relating Shadow and Christ envisions the 'ultimate context' within which each unique therapy unfolds. Through 'crucifixion', neurotic suffering due to one-sided development can be transformed into religiously meaningful suffering."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133176149573633,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:15:07.357Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":2,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Douglas A McArthur","hits":1,"label":"Douglas A McArthur"},{"value":"Genia M Haddon","hits":1,"label":"Genia M Haddon"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Jung, C.
