The assumption of this study was that such an absence from work would act as a critical incident in the lives of ministers; as a result, ministers who had endured such a period of sick-leave would have considered their practice of self-care at a deep level and improved their self-care practices; such consideration and practice would be instructive to other ministers in the PCI and elsewhere. This study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with six pastors in the PCI. The review of literature and analysis of the six interviews focused on three key areas: stress in clergy; self-care in leaders; self-care in clergy. The study found that an absence from work due to a stress related illness is a critical incident in the lives of pastors, that it did cause them to practi ce self-care, and consequently is instructive to other pastors. The study concluded that in order for pastors to exercise ministries that are as refreshed and renewed as possible, they must increase their level of well-being and maintain this over time."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130628239917056,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:34:37.481Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:54:49Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:02:57Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ac4a7c16-e96f-4c21-b807-1882bc9c5e4d","accessControl_ssim":["d409d330-60a9-4897-a5cd-3920864f865f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Bringing wholeness to the holy women of Savannah Temple AME-Zion: wholesome stress management"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:54:48Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:06:28Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5ef472d4-d85b-464d-a79a-e7df146c3720"],"hasLease_ssim":["206d42a0-a109-4314-b29b-2e5f73564793"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Hood Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Robert M Lewis"],"year_tesim":["2008"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Valentine O Sutton"],"publisher_tesim":["Hood Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Small groups","Perfection","Stress management"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Wholesome ways of managing stress. It is an attempt to provide information about stress, and to emphasize coping skills. After preliminary research, the writer found that role stress, conflict stress, and culture stress were three key stressors in the lives of Valley pastors. An eight hour seminar on stress in ministry was scheduled. The two-fold goal of increasing awareness of stress and increasing coping efficacy was emphasized in the seminar. After the seminar, six pastors were monitored over a six-week period to determine benefits received from the seminar experience. The data from these evaluations encouraged the writer to believe that the objectives of the project were realized."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e59d8a7f-b140-41e1-9d1f-4e98aaa1d973"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132387862642688,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:02:35.588Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T03:45:59Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:52:07Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ce60912f-a4b6-4d5c-a133-46e376a07f44","accessControl_ssim":["8aa3297b-8c29-4dec-9d6d-acccd0e0c515"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A project to enable designated church leadership to understand stress in the minister's professional life...in times of work overload.."],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T03:45:58Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:03:01Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7cf43021-2573-44f6-8185-9e9846995c65"],"hasLease_ssim":["d7292fca-8bfc-4dd1-94b6-e504df872dc0"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1994"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["E M Hay"],"publisher_tesim":["Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy--Psychology","Stress management"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this doctor of ministry work project is to enable designated church leadership to understand stress in the minister's professional life and develop church strategies to enhance its effective management during times of relocation, work overload, and organized opposition.
