Responses to 3,034 congregational surveys indicated positive correlation between increased generosity and stewardship leadership, spiritual nurture, social justice involvement, and stewardship best practices. Congregations where givers and revenue increased, with individual annual giving over {dollar}1,000, more often engaged all of these strategies. The study explores the development of the biblical and theological history limiting women's vocational choices. It traces the enactment, well into the 1960s, of 'disjoining' in the deaconess order. Remembrances of affected women enflesh the archival records. A theological framework is applied to assess the quality of the apology. The disjoining and the apology are both stories of lost opportunity. The women lost vocational expression and suffered economic and social loss. The church made no connections with continuing patterns of gender-based discrimination."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799715439690907648,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:46:31.673Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:42:12Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:53:03Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"2f0407fc-7091-4a2d-8367-5a5f96b3a604","accessControl_ssim":["2904f061-1526-4e7a-8940-a0cbed116934"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Dusting off the doctrine"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:42:11Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:30:02Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["32313a4f-f400-4e58-9886-08492303ddcd"],"hasLease_ssim":["02c3f043-ae3c-43dd-91e8-b10c2431a474"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Joanne Lindstrom"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Catherine Faith MacLean"],"keyword_tesim":["Sermon preparation"],"publisher_tesim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Faith","Clergy--Office","Theology, Doctrinal","United Church of Canada","Preaching, Protestant","Church--Teaching office"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this paper is to enliven the understanding of doctrine in preaching. A case is made in this paper for preaching as reflection to constitute an applicable homiletical model for a postmodern, post-theistic, and progressive theological context. This model was developed over a three-year period, grounded in preaching projects which were designed and tested in a diverse, multi-generational, affirming congregation of the United Church of Canada. Drawing on two projects and eight program sermons undertaken as part of the writer's studies in the ACTS D. Min. in preaching program, this paper describes how a conversational homiletic, a homiletic of hospitality, and a collaborative homiletic can provide the essential elements for preaching as reflection. Further, this work demonstrates how preaching as reflection sets a spacious table which values diversity, honors experience, is inspired by a variety of different sources, and practices genuine hospitality. This thesis seeks conversation about the practice of preaching among those who preach from a progressive or expansive theological paradigm."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["2ed862c2-32c4-448b-95c8-4a58c3d74b5b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134753169080320,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:40:11.320Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:28:04Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:18:13Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"2bc95b61-330a-4cd2-b828-1e58e5522ce9","accessControl_ssim":["39c3b6e9-c36b-45aa-a314-d3bc436396b4"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["'May I have a word?' With the Wesleyan Methodist Church of Bermuda half its former size, and the United Church of Canada struggling with shrinking resources, both question the value of union. A vision of union as household, proposed by Konrad Raiser, provides the template for renewed relationship."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129873317625856,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:22:37.531Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:08:13Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:46:22Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ff91bc28-7984-4849-b52c-26519688cd90","accessControl_ssim":["464a6201-1eec-431f-8be5-26d173fca6df"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Is Christ in the court? a narrative study of litigation in the United Church of Canada"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:08:12Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:26:21Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d631ec35-6e76-43ed-8062-edd1ea2381c5"],"hasLease_ssim":["2bc99307-b28f-4cf1-868f-7ce944f342c2"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["St Stephen's College (Edmonton, AB)"],"advisor_tesim":["Graeme Clark"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Wallace N Fry"],"publisher_tesim":["St. Stephen's College University of Alberta"],"subject_tesim":["Ecclesiastical law--Canada","United Church of Canada"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project/dissertation explores, through narrative inquiry, five presbyters experience of litigation within the United Church of Canada. He then offers an overview of ecclesiastical and civil legal process prior to exploring the research participant's stories of church litigation. These stories serve as a basis for the development of a theology of suffering and compassion to address church litigation. Biblical foundations for this work exist in stories about Moses and the letter to the Philippians. There are also historical precedents. Various studies have found that such groups can help individuals manage stress. Forty ministry personnel were invited to participate in this study as part of facilitated, non-facilitated or control groups. Stress and coping were measured using Human Synergistic's Stress Processing Report. Results suggest that such groups are effective as ways of managing stress."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Ashland Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["beb93775-0b27-4cc6-9fb0-f2ad62e68517"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130602153443328,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:34:12.603Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T06:39:42Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:53:51Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"9974ff35-9222-4dd4-bcff-3b6d5975a6e3","accessControl_ssim":["3dcce9b1-ff40-4793-807c-a5c42ff41905"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A venue for wonder: a qualitative research project about the functional theologies of men in the United Church of Canada"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T06:39:42Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:37:17Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ce357157-850c-4169-a3c3-70ec77336c90"],"hasLease_ssim":["d4dc4e86-de27-48f6-a676-55c20ef9c0dd"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["St Stephen's College (Edmonton, AB)"],"advisor_tesim":["Michael McKernan"],"year_tesim":["1998"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Robert J Root"],"publisher_tesim":["St. Stephen's College University of Alberta"],"subject_tesim":["United Church of Canada","Theology, Practical--Study and teaching","Church work with men"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project explores the faith stories of 14 male members of the United Church of Canada in Peterborough, Ontario, seeking to determine the 'functional theology' of men in the church--what they believe and how they come to their belief.
