Play is how we begin the discovery of our world, and in this thesis the author seeks to better understand how this wonderful gift can apply to preaching. In these pages, the author outlines the theory of play put forward by the British psychoanalyst D. W. Winnicott and explains how his theories are impacting homiletics. The author's contention is that it is through play that the preacher not only gains a better grasp of the biblical text, but the preacher also gains a deeper more soul-searching experience into the realm of the Holy. The implication for pastors is a renewed freedom that expresses itself through powerfully transforming sermons."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["7eda0323-a6d9-4fe2-807a-22620dd389a5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128635188445184,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:02:56.759Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T01:38:59Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:42:31Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"bc415fe1-b4d0-48d1-ab13-ff130b9af3ae","accessControl_ssim":["465edc88-346d-46c1-8480-095155bfe640"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Play as a paradigm of meaning-making in child psychotherapy"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T01:38:58Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:33:19Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["80ce7681-d680-4db4-8704-d838ef444d9e"],"hasLease_ssim":["b77459bc-3ad7-4767-8199-b09cdf3c1f90"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Lallene J Rector"],"year_tesim":["1991"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Mary C Ehrgood"],"publisher_tesim":["Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Pastoral psychology","Winnicott, Donald Woods, 1896-1971","Play","Church work with children","Child psychology","Fox, Matthew","Psychotherapy"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project integrates the theories of Matthew Fox's concept of co-creation and Donald Winnicott's concept of transitional space to evaluate the psychotherapeutic theory and practice of Anna Freud, Melanie Klein, and Virginia Axline. This project places Winnicott in the Freudian and Kleinian tradition, and relates his theories to the footwashing and last discourse in John's gospel, and to pastoral care. The facilitating environment demanded for unfolding the dependent individual's maturational potential is the caregiver: normally the mother, therapeutically the psychoanalyst, for discipleship the pastor. All care retains maternal characteristics, and implies sufficiency for development of trust to repudiate the caregiver, who remains available for establishing personal relationship.
