After first examining traditional assumptions of authority, the project turns to feminist theologians who offer a different paradigm. The research focuses on six clergywomen serving as pastors/heads of staff in large membership congregations in the Presbyterian Church (USA), and considers how they, as women, embody and exercise authority using a model of partnership rather than the hierarchical model to which the church has been accustomed. A long-term sermon plan was developed and implemented using the book of 1 Corinthians.  An instrument was developed and used to pretest and posttest in order to measure the effectiveness of the program.  Focus groups were utilized to complement the quantitative data.  The analysis of the posttest and data from the focus groups show a measurable change toward growth in some areas of Scriptural beliefs, attitudes, values, and behavior. In order to critically examine this problem attention is first given to the issue of identity formation, the role it plays in the development of human beings and how unhealthy psychological and psychosocial development plays a major role in leading some young people to act out violent or otherwise anti-social behavior(s).  Posited here is that Erik Erikson provides a planned theory of behavior that sheds great light on the role of identity formation, prosocial behavior both as an individual and as an individual who is part of a reference group. Racial identity, racial socialization and racial salience must be considered in any approach designed to assist Black American youth relative to the issue of youth crime and violence.  Theological and ethical analyses are brought to bear on the problem being examined.  The position taken is that the problem of youth violence and crime is, perhaps, best addressed from within a religious/theological framework of meaning.  Moreover, that the Black Church and African-American moral tradition provides a model for developing ethical leaders.  Such a model can provide a useful framework for working with young people in order to reduce violence, criminal and other anti-social behaviors among them.  Walter Earl Fluker has done extensive research in the area of developing ethical leaders from the Black Church and African Americans moral tradition. This work is based on his exhaustive study of Howard Thurman and Martin Luther King, Jr.  The model is based on four concepts; agapeic love (the overarching concept), character, civility and community.  Based on these concepts a program model with these four foci as the foundational principles is described.  The program is designed to work with 8-14 year old inner-city, socio-economically deprived youth.  An evaluation of project outcomes follows. This dissertation takes a critical look at important social and demographic factors within the community and against the background of biblical and theological principles, establishes a unique and workable model of ministry. The thesis is that sexual abuse negatively affects a little girl's imagery of God and her self-esteem, but ultimately is not the final determiner of how she relates to God or how she views herself. For the next sixty-three years, the congregation participated in and was influenced by a mining economy.  The thesis goes beyond an institutional history and examines how church and society influenced each other.  Areas of research include an examination of the social lives of members, the role women played, the function of preaching, and cooperation and competition between various religious bodies.  Issues of religious pluralism, secularism, and economic uncertainty are examined. With a shallow understanding of Christian peace, shame suppresses conflict.  This project considers how Paul reclaimed his honor and opened the door to a healthy resolution to conflict in Corinth.  A one-day event was offered to clergy stressing that with divine providence honor and shame can mobilize persons in conflict to healthy resolution rather than destructive separation. No specialized denominational resources currently exist to help these at-risk churches.  This dissertation documents the conception and experimental use with a case congregation, of a 'pre-mission' parish consultation model along with the model's evaluation and proposed revisions.  Furthermore this model is described here so as to make it available to other parish professionals for their critique, use and further development. Method of Study: Insights from a wide variety of homiletical perspectives are compared and contrasted in relationship to this metaphor. Many different lay and clergy, both Latino and Euro-American, were interviewed.  A small group met for six weeks to do a focused study on individual and systemic racism and to plan specific actions of resistance.  A small group resource was designed.  Sermons were preached using this metaphor.  Results: Relationships continue to develop with a local Spanish Assembly Latino congregation.  Three Vacation Bible School programs have been planned together.  Latinos are using the church building.  A Latino staff person was hired. The church hosted an anti-racism workshop in the community of Quincy.
